AirTran disconts flights between Atlanta and Miami on Oct. 7.

AirTran will discontinue flights services between Atlanta and Miami on Oct. 7.This unfortunate news can only mean one thing. With biggies American and Delta left to share the passengers, airfares to Miami are expected to go sky high. And, it is quite unlikely that these two carriers will attempt to match the low airfares of fee-happy Spirit, currently serving nearly Fort Lauderdale from Atlanta with nonstop flights.Through Sept. 16, AirTran is offering one-way sale rates of $79 to Miami when travel takes place on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. A 10-day advance purchase is required. How high are rates expected to climb? It’s hard to nail down, but let’s look at one recent market that experienced the departure of AirTran service. The budget carrier recently ceased service between Atlanta and Newark, N.J. a red hot market for business travelers and those heading into Manhattan for a leisure getaway. One-way sale rates typically fell in the $89-$99 range.Continental and Delta currently serve this market with frequent nonstop flights. Both carriers publish a $348 round-trip rate, however, it requires a 21-day advance purchase notice — an unreasonable scenario for business travelers. As well, a minimum stay of three nights is required. That minimum stay doesn’t fit the ideal itineraries of many weekend warriors. Fares requiring a two-week notice and the same minimum stay are $448; $584 with a one-week advance notice. Airfares requiring just a one-night minimum stay are a whopping $780.

As to the Miami market, prices could climb slowly over the weeks and months depending on the demand. Another possibility could see American and Delta requiring passengers to purchase a round-trip ticket versus them having the ability to mix and match one-way rates to create an ideal itinerary based on flight schedules.Either way, enjoy the affordable rates while you can to Miami.AirTran will discontinue nonstop flight service between Atlanta and Quad Cities-Moline, Ill. on Nov. 30. Expect huge price increases as Delta will remain the sole carrier with nonstop service.Need a little incentive to head south to sunny Florida? The new Hotel Urbano offers nightly rates from $119 on stays through Dec. 31.
