Northern Portuguese city Porto was chosen as a destination because Auvergne has a large Portuguese community while Charleroi, in southern Belgium, is a hub for Ryanair. The budget airline announced on Wednesday it was returning to the Strasbourg-Entzheim airport in eastern France after a 10-year absence triggered by the withdrawal of subsidies it was receiving from the city’s chamber of commerce. The airline will resume operations from Strasbourg in northeastern France in April 2013 with flights to London Stansted three days a week and to Porto on two days.

After inundating Metro Manila with heavy rains last weekend, Tropical Depression Ferdie battered Hong Kong yesterday causing several flights to be disrupted to and from the former Crown Colony. As the storm, with international code name “Talim,” poured heavily over the Chep Lap Kok International Airport in Hong Kong, the early morning flight service of both Cathay Pacific and Cebu Pacific had to be cancelled by the management of the two airline companies citing extremely bad weather in Hong Kong as the cause.

Cathay Pacific flight CX904, which was scheduled to depart at 6:20 a.m., was cancelled and as a result, all the affected passengers were checked in at a nearby hotel while awaiting for the weather in Hong Kong to improve and the flight to resume. At the same time, Cebu Pacific also cancelled its early morning flight to Hong Kong. CEB flight 5J108, which was set to depart at 5:40 a.m., was cancelled at the last minute as weather and traffic conditions at the Hong Kong airport became worse.CEB said all affected passengers will be accommodated in the next available flights.
Meanwhile, two HK-bound flights from Canada and Amsterdam had to be diverted to Manila early yesterday morning also due to the bad weather.

Emirates airline has announced that its five daily flights to London Heathrow will all be served by A380s by 1st February next year.
Combined with the daily Manchester A380 service, this will mean the world’s largest A380 carrier will be sending 42 A380 flights to the UK each week, by far its biggest A380 market.Emirates has steadily grown its London A380 operations since first deploying the aircraft on a scheduled service to Heathrow in December 2008, the year the airline started to receive deliveries of the world’s largest passenger jet aircraft.
Due to high customer demand for the A380 product, soon, travellers to and from London Heathrow will be able to enjoy our flagship aircraft on every flight,” said Salem Obaidalla, Emirates’ Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations, Europe & Russian Federation. “Our customers will also have a greater chance of an all-A380 experience when travelling across our network between London, Dubai and places such as Bangkok, Beijing, Tokyo, Sydney, and from 1st October, Melbourne.”

Expanding East and West

The news follows a flood of recent announcements that the carrier has made detailing its rapid expansion plans.Yesterday, the carrier said it plans to launch three additional destinations in the next six months, on top of the 12 new routes already being rolled out in 2012.From 1st November, Emirates will launch four weekly flights to Adelaide, rising to a daily service from 1st February 2013. Adelaide will be the airline’s fifth destination in Australia which is currently served with 70 flights per week. The airline’s current double-daily service to Perth will grow to 19 weekly flights from 1st December, becoming a triple daily operation from 1st March next year.On the western side of the globe, the French city of Lyon will be added to the Emirates’ network from 5th December, the carrier’s third point in France after Paris and Nice. Emirates will operate five weekly flights to the city.Lastly, the carrier said it will Emirates will begin flights into Poland from 6th February 2013, where the airline will operate a daily service to the capital, Warsaw.

“Emirates is currently in a concentrated and sustained period of global expansion,” said Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline & Group. “The addition of Adelaide to our network and the boost to our Perth operations demonstrates our commitment to investment and growth in our Australian operations and highlights the economic strength and global demand for the two cities as business, leisure and investment destinations. We will also grow capacity to Melbourne with the introduction of daily A380 services in October, in addition to our existing double decker flight into Sydney. Our increased operations into France, linking with Lyon, comes on the heels of our announcing a second A380 service into Paris from 1st January – all of which a response to acute demand for our services to and from this market. Poland continues our exciting push into this region of Europe,” Sheikh Ahmed added.

Emirates has already launched nine new destinations so far in 2012; Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Dublin, Lusaka, Harare, Dallas, Seattle, Ho Chi Minh City and yesterday Barcelona. Lisbon will launch on 9th July, Erbil follows on 12th August and Washington comes on board as of 12th September.Aviation analyst Saj Ahmad said it is no surprise that Emirates is upping its presence in new and existing markets. “Announcements like these tend to follow when carriers place big orders and Emirates is no exception,” he said. “And while it has to deploy its 777-300ER and A380 inventory somewhere, it wouldn’t be launching such routes and increased frequencies if demand didn’t support their planned growth. My only surprise, if indeed that’s the right word, is why there haven’t been even more news announcements. But after all, there’s only so many pilots that Emirates can snare/train and employ and I would hazard a guess that it is this issue, not regulatory. that is constraining their furious growth,” he added.

British Airways is bringing a bit of winter sunshine to London City Airport by extending its popular Palma and Ibiza flights to a year-round service. At present the two Balearic Island destinations are summer-only but from October they will continue through the winter with two flights a week on Thursdays and Sundays. The news will come as a welcome boost to Ibiza since the island does not currently have a single direct service to the UK during the winter. The two islands are very popular with leisure customers through the summer and now winter sun seekers and second home owners have the chance to fly there in style throughout the year. Holidays in Ibiza offer something for everyone. Away from the lively nightlife hotspots, the island harbours secluded coves, family resorts, pine-scented hills and vibrant Catalan culture. The glamorous Ibiza Town is another draw full of ancient sites and party venues.

Luke Hayhoe, general manager commercial, BA CityFlyer, said: “Leisure flying is a really important part of our business now from London City. Winter sun breaks are a very popular market and with London City’s unique 20 minute check-in time with luggage customers can leave the gloom of winter and be in the sun in less than three hours. The news follows the launch of new flights to Mahon in Menorca for summer 2012 which completes the airline’s Balearic Islands portfolio. As the airline continues to grow its network customers have more choice to more business and leisure destinations, flying on one of the youngest aircraft fleets in the business.British Airways offers all-inclusive fares to all destinations, which include a generous free 23kg luggage allowance, free on-line check-in and seat selection 24 hours before departure and complimentary food and drink on board

Caribbean Airlines, the region’s leading carrier, is now bringing Europe closer to Trinidad with the commencement of its nonstop flights to Gatwick, United Kingdom, which took to the air on Friday, June 15, 2012.Connecting the London hub to Trinidad’s vibrant Piarco International Airport, the airline will operate a twice-weekly service, which will depart on Thursdays and Saturdays and arrive in the UK on Fridays and Sundays. Flights from London will depart on Fridays and Sundays at 1250 and on arrival in Trinidad, passengers can access connections to Barbados, Guyana, Suriname, Venezuela, Antigua, Grenada, St. Maarten, St. Lucia, and Jamaica, which adds to the convenience of this service.

The airline is committed to this service and will be working along with Trinidad and Tobago’s Tourism Development Company to ensure that there are more opportunities for increasing tourism traffic from Europe to not only Trinidad and Tobago, but to the region.Accounting for 62 percent of all arrivals into Tobago, the UK market is extremely important to Trinidad and Tobago. When one factors the entire European market, this percentage increases to 84 percent. Therefore, for visitors to have another option to access our beautiful twin islands, is certainly a plus.

A number OF airlines including Aer Lingus have announced the cancellation of flights to and from London today and tomorrow as heavy snow is expected to fall in the area.Aer Lingus says that some of its services today between Dublin, Cork, London Heathrow and London Gatwick airports are affected.Sixteen of tomorrow’s flights have been cancelled by the airline and those include flights between London and Belfast and Shannon.

The airline says that passengers affected by the cancellations can reschedule their flight or cancel their booking online. The list of affected flights is available here.BMI has also announced cancellations, while British Airways says that it is compiling Sunday’s revised Heathrow schedule and it plans to operate a normal schedule at London Gatwick and London City. The BAA said that a reduced flight schedule would operate at Heathrow tomorrow in an effort to minimise the disruption and it expects over 70 per cent of those due to travel through the airport tomorrow to actually do so.

The airport is due to begin publishing a revised schedule of tomorrow’s flights online from 6pm today. It says that the schedule will be revised on a rolling basis as necessary.Heavy snow is due to fall over London tonight with up to 10cm of snow expected to build up by Sunday morning. At the time of writing, Gatwick Airport said it was still operating as normal but warned passengers that they should expect some disruption tomorrow due to cancellations and delays.Anyone who is due to fly to or from London this weekend is advised to contact their airline for further information and to check the status of their flight before leaving for the airport.Earlier today, Ryanair announced it was cancelling dozens of its Italian flights due to adverse weather conditions.

Air New Zealand says it won’t pull out of the London market, but it will have to reduce the number of weekly flights.Radio New Zealand’s business editor says the airline is in the final stages of reviewing its loss-making international business, to tackle falling patronage and higher fuel costs.Last year, Air New Zealand admitted it lost more than $1 million per week on flights outside the Pacific.

In a message to staff, chief executive Rob Fyfe says it’s no secret the airline is struggling to make long-haul London routes profitable. But Mr Fyfe said Air NZ it has no intention of pulling out of London, nor any other market it services. He said the airline will need to change its flight schedule to reflect weaker passenger demand, and this week, it cut its London to Hong Kong route from seven to five days a week.Last year Qantas reduced capacity to Europe. Budget airline Air Asia X also recently said it’s withdrawing flights to Europe and India because of high fuel prices and weak demand.
