A number OF airlines including Aer Lingus have announced the cancellation of flights to and from London today and tomorrow as heavy snow is expected to fall in the area.Aer Lingus says that some of its services today between Dublin, Cork, London Heathrow and London Gatwick airports are affected.Sixteen of tomorrow’s flights have been cancelled by the airline and those include flights between London and Belfast and Shannon.

The airline says that passengers affected by the cancellations can reschedule their flight or cancel their booking online. The list of affected flights is available here.BMI has also announced cancellations, while British Airways says that it is compiling Sunday’s revised Heathrow schedule and it plans to operate a normal schedule at London Gatwick and London City. The BAA said that a reduced flight schedule would operate at Heathrow tomorrow in an effort to minimise the disruption and it expects over 70 per cent of those due to travel through the airport tomorrow to actually do so.

The airport is due to begin publishing a revised schedule of tomorrow’s flights online from 6pm today. It says that the schedule will be revised on a rolling basis as necessary.Heavy snow is due to fall over London tonight with up to 10cm of snow expected to build up by Sunday morning. At the time of writing, Gatwick Airport said it was still operating as normal but warned passengers that they should expect some disruption tomorrow due to cancellations and delays.Anyone who is due to fly to or from London this weekend is advised to contact their airline for further information and to check the status of their flight before leaving for the airport.Earlier today, Ryanair announced it was cancelling dozens of its Italian flights due to adverse weather conditions.

Air Seychelles, the national airline of the Republic of the Seychelles, today announced details of its new direct flights from Mah? to Abu Dhabi. This follows last week’s announcement that Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, would form a strategic partnership by taking a 40 per cent stake in the airline, Etihad Airways, the national airline of the UAE said in a press release.

Complementing Etihad Airways’ existing four weekly services from Abu Dhabi to Mah?, March 12 will see Air Seychelles inaugurate two weekly return services on the route. Effectively, the new schedule will offer six direct services per week between Abu Dhabi and Mah?, increasing to seven per week from June 2012.These Air Seychelles flights will operate on a Boeing 767-300ER series aircraft, in a two-class configuration, offering a total of 844 seats each week.

A key benefit to travellers of the new Air Seychelles non-stop Mah?-Abu Dhabi service is convenient flight arrival and departure times and connectivity from Mah? with Etihad Airways’ codeshare flights through Abu Dhabi to the Far East, Australia, the Indian Subcontinent and the Gulf region.Etihad Airways guests, particularly from key feeder markets of Germany, France, Italy, Belgium and the United Kingdom, will also benefit from the increased connectivity options in travel to Mah? and onward destinations across the Air Seychelles network, such as Mauritius and Johannesburg.

Cramer Ball, Air Seychelles Chief Executive Officer, said: “The Seychelles have already proven to be a hugely popular holiday destination amongst Etihad Airways guests. With these additional two Air Seychelles weekly flights, we look forward to successfully serving the route, tourism and business at each end and beyond.Etihad Airways commenced services itself to the Seychelles on November 2, 2011.

Atlantic Canadian travellers may need to make alternate plans to visit the Big Apple.American Airlines will no longer offer service to John F. Kennedy International Airport from Halifax as of April 3, citing continued restructuring under the Chapter 11 protection it received last year. We’d been serving the market since October 2009 but, over time, it just didn’t develop as we had hoped, said Ed Martelle, spokesman for the airline based in Fort Worth, Texas, in an email Tuesday.

The decision leaves United Airlines, which includes the former Continental Airlines, as the only carrier offering direct service to the New York City area. It currently flies from Halifax to Newark Liberty International airport in New Jersey.Jerry Staples, vice-president of marketing and business development at Halifax Stanfield International Airport, said the American Airlines move was relayed to the airport a few weeks ago. They let us know that as a result of their restructuring and Chapter 11 protection in the U.S., of course, that they would be stopping service,” Staples said.

“It’s always disappointing to see a carrier leave a market but, having said that, the door is open with them. We have very strong relationships with their executive and their planning teams. So once they go through the restructuring, we’ll be back talking to them about reinstatement of service on the JFK market. There is significant traffic to New York from Halifax, Staples said, noting that travellers not only use it to visit the city, but to utilize the vast array of worldwide connections available through JFK and Newark. The decision to terminate the route didn’t come as a surprise to Robert Kokonis, president of AirTrav Inc., an airline consulting firm near Toronto.

They have to take a look at ways to reduce the costs of their financial activities and certainly they’re looking at their operation from top to bottom, looking for opportunities to save money,” he said. They’re going to be looking for routes such as Halifax, which perhaps are marginal producers or potentially losing money, so that doesn’t surprise me.While there is an extensive network of connections to Europe and Latin and South America out of Newark, travellers out of Halifax will see a difference, at least in the short term, Kokonis said. The nice thing about JFK is you’ve got a lot of international carriers serving that destination, which do not serve Newark, and definitely not LaGuardia, so not having that certainly that is a loss,” he said.

For Nova Scotia, certainly, it’s a loss, because it’s a great route for the business community.Kokonis speculated that Air Canada or its regional carrier Express (formerly Jazz), which is based out of Halifax, could step in to fill the void.Don’t ever say never to Air Canada (which) announced a flight to JFK last week from Toronto, and they haven’t been in the JFK market for probably 12 years or longer.Staples said discussions with other airlines are ongoing, though he declined to name them. We’ve been in conversation with other carriers and have every expectation to believe that you’ll see additional capacity put on New York.He said Delta Airlines will resume service to LaGuardia Airport on May 26, after having suspended direct service to JFK a couple of years ago.As of mid-July, Delta will offer two flights a day to LaGuardia. And right now their schedule shows that they’ll fly year-round once a day in the winter of 2012-13,” Staples said.So the option in between April 3 and May 26 for New York will be on United/Continental through Newark airport.

AirAsia X will double its frequency on the Kuala Lumpur-Tokyo Haneda route to meet demand in the Asia-Pacific region. The airline will increase its flights from three to six times weekly from March 23.It said this was to service its core markets in Australasia, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea after demand for the route rebounded with healthy two-way traffic.AirAsia X chief executive officer Azran Osman-Rani said the airline had seen a steady increase in passenger traffic and yield from the Haneda route since its launch on Dec 9, 2010.With our wide network and strong brand affinity in Japan, we are geared up to capitalise on the continuous increase in demand for air travel to and from Japan.

We will also leverage on our affiliate airline, AirAsia, to provide a feeder network for intra-Asean travel as the world shifts its focus towards Asia and the emerging markets across Asean, he said in a statement yesterday.AirAsia X claims it has to date flown over 100,000 passengers to Tokyo with an average passenger load factor of 75%.The airline, however, suffered a drop in passenger traffic from March to June last year due to the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in northeast Japan on March 9.AirAsia X is offering promotional fares from as low as RM199 and Premium seats from RM999 one way to Haneda in conjunction with the increased frequency. The promotional fares are only for the added flights and up for grabs from Jan 27 to Feb 13 for travel between March 23 to Oct 27 this year.

Budget airlines Jetstar will stop flying between Macau and Singapore starting February 6 after the number of passengers dropped significantly last year, the local aviation regulator confirmed. The Macau Civil Aviation Authority (AACM) told Portuguese-language newspaper Tribuna de Macau that Jetstar would drop the Singapore route for commercial reasons.
Last year the low-cost airline carried about 79,600 people in this route, 12,500 less than in 2010. This 13.8 percent drop took the passenger figures below the 82,100 registered by Jetstar in 2008, the first year it flew to Macau.

Despite the decision made by the subsidiary of Australian giant Qantas, there are two other airlines currently connecting the territory to Singapore: Tiger Airways and Air Macau. On the other hand, there are two carriers eyeing the local airport, AACM added. One of them is low-cost Thai Smile, a subsidiary of Thai Airways that should begin operations in July, and the other is Taipei-based Mandarin Airline. But no formal request has been filed so far, the authority said.Meanwhile almost 1.4 million people flew with flag carrier Air Macau last year, up by 19,480 from 2010, AACM revealed. However the airline is still far from the figures registered in 2009.
