Jetstar is, subject to regulatory approval, to launch flights to Beijing, China. The airline is planning to launch a new daily Melbourne-Singapore-Beijing service starting from 24 November 2011 that will add more than 8,000 seats a week from across the Jetstar network to Singapore where they will join the flight at Changi Airport.

Beijing bound passengers and returning travellers to Beijing will be able to enjoy a stopover in Singapore to shop, or indulge in the myriad tastes of the city’s restaurants, generating an added source of tourism revenue.Jetstar Asia CEO, Ms Chong Phit Lian, said Chinese visitors to Singapore typically spend as much as 60% of their holiday budget on shopping excursions in the city – one of the world’s best retail havens.

“Singapore’s attractions such as Sentosa Island, the two new integrated resorts and the endless choices in local cuisines showcasing our multicultural city, are a strong draw for visitors,Ms Chong said. From Singapore, Jetstar now has three long haul services, to Melbourne, Auckland and Beijing – providing two different classes of comfort in Business and Economy.Beijing also presents visitors with many attractions, including the world heritage listed Forbidden City, Summer Palace and of course, the Great Wall of China. And from Beijing, with China’s growing network of high speed rails, short trips can be made conveniently to other major cities, allowing passengers to maximise their trips to China,Ms. Chong added.

Beijing will become Jetstar’s 9th Chinese destination joining Haikou, Shantou, Guilin, Hangzhou and Ningbo all of which were launched in the past 18 months. The new daily Singapore-Beijing service will connect with Jetstar’s existing Melbourne-Singapore service via Jetstar’s Singapore hub, with a stop-over in Singapore on the inbound Australian sector.

At least 20 flights into Auckland, mostly smaller planes from regional centres, have been cancelled or delayed. Two Jetstar flights from Christchurch and Wellington are still on the ground waiting to leave for Auckland. The MetService’s Bob McDavitt said regular northerlies of late were resulting in Auckland getting more fog than usual.

Six flights between Rotorua and Sydney have been cancelled this month and next because of low passenger numbers.Air New Zealand spokesman Mark Street has confirmed the transtasman flight scheduled for last Saturday and Tuesday were cancelled as well as next Tuesday’s and flights on three Saturdays in June – June 4, 11 and 18.Passengers booked on those flights have been re-booked on to services to and from Auckland.

Rotorua International Airport and the Rotorua District Council were informed just over six weeks ago.A flight between Rotorua and Sydney on Saturday, April 2, was cancelled because of low passenger numbers, bringing the total number of flights cancelled so far this year to seven, compared with just two flights cancelled because of low numbers last year. However, the airline said it remained committed to the success of the flights. The cancellations have had an impact on events at Queen’s Birthday Weekend including the 3D Rotorua Off Road Winter Multisport Festival incorporating the 2011 Australasian Multisport Championships.Organiser Neil Gellatly said 11 top athletes from Australia travelling to the event had to change their travel plans, at extra cost.

One of the performers at the Rotorua Blues Festival, Alison Penny, has also had to change her plans and travel earlier to Rotorua because her direct flight on June 11 had been cancelled.Festival organiser Sally Garner said it was the second consecutive year the performer had to change her plans because of a flight being cancelled. The Galaxy Travel NDuro Winter MTB Series 2011 is on June 12 but organiser Marcus Diprose said it was not affected by the cancellations. However, he was not surprised flights were being cancelled.

He said he was on a transtasman flight a fortnight ago and there were only 49 passengers.Rotorua District Councillor Charles Sturt said the flight cancellations were extremely disappointing.Less flights, less income for the airport company, less money to pay the interest on the debt .If people don’t use it they will lose it.Ratepayers were paying a lot to promote Rotorua in Sydney, Mr Sturt said. That money should be bearing fruit and obviously it’s not.He said he believed flights to Brisbane and Coolangata should be introduced as many people had been asking for them.

Another councillor, Glenys Searancke, said she was not surprised about the cancellations but was concerned. If we don’t get more flights – internal or international – the ratepayers will continue to carry the airport. However, she said two transtasman flights a week in winter was asking too much and she wondered if Air New Zealand would cut it back to one flight.
Destination Rotorua Tourism Marketing general manager Don Gunn said the cancellations were disappointing but the winter months were always going to be a challenge.May and June was always a quiet time,he said.

He said the tourism industry across the Tasman also faced challenges with more Australians travelling to countries like the United States because of the strength of the Australian dollar.Mr Gunn said passenger numbers for July were looking okay.Rotorua mayor Kevin Winters said a small number of cancelled flights during the traditionally slow pre-winter period was not unexpected and the practice of cancelling flights was normal for airlines everywhere. However, he was pleased to hear the number of domestic passengers in the period between July 2010 and April 2011 was up 17 per cent on the same time the previous year and passenger numbers on the transtasman service between December 2010 and April 2011 were up 26 per cent on the same period last year.

Asked if the transtasman route was in danger of being canned altogether, Mr Street said the airline remained committed to the success of the flights and had no plans to cancel further flights. The airline was about to start a major ski season campaign in Sydney and Melbourne promoting Rotorua, Christchurch and Queenstown as New Zealand’s three main gateways to the country’s best ski fields. The promotion, which would include a ski photography exhibition from some of Australia’s best ski photographers, would run for about three weeks, he said.Last week Air New Zealand announced transtasman plans under the alliance with Virgin Australia, starting between November 2011 and March 2012. Capacity on Rotorua-Sydneyflight was expected to increase by about 8 per cent – or 940 seats during that time due to the reconfiguration of seating on the A320, Mr Street said.

Emirates is adding a third daily flight to its Sydney-Dubai route so travellers can make faster connections to Europe, an airline spokesperson confirmed to Australian Business Traveller today. The early-morning flight EK415 is specifically scheduled to arrive into Dubai at 1330 for same-day connections to London, Birmingham, Munich, Paris, Rome, Milan, Zurich, Athens and Moscow. In the return direction, the flight leaves Dubai at a connection-convenient 0140 to arrive in Sydney at 2230. Unlike Emirates’ daily Airbus A380 flight to Sydney, which extends to Auckland, the new flights won’t cross the Tasman before returning to Dubai.

Business travellers from regional Australia have particular reason to celebrate. Emirates will put up connecting passengers in first and business class overnight at the Stamford Plaza hotel at Sydney Airport so they can be certain to make the early flight to Dubai.Emirates will use stretched Boeing 777-300ER aircraft on the route, with 12 first class suites, 42 angled lie-flat business class seats, and 304 seats in a 3-4-3 economy class configuration at the back of the plane.

Frequent flyers may remember the additional flight from previous years: Emirates used a smaller 777-200LR plane as a third daily flight before moving that aircraft on to other routes. The flight is returning from October 2011.The business class seats on the 777 aren’t quite as comfortable as the A380 seats for sleeping since they recline to an angle rather than fully flat — and unfortunately there’s no stand-up bar at the back of business class like there is on the superjumbo. But business travellers looking to make early connections into Europe may find the better timings an acceptable tradeoff, especially on a day flight, because the recliner seats are comfortable enough for snoozing, and the award-winning widescreen ICE on-demand entertainment is just as good.If you’re booking a business class ticket, don’t miss our special report on the best seats to choose in business on Emirates’ 777-300ER.

The return journey is a red-eye night flight, however, leaving Cairns at 2300 and arriving into Auckland at 0530.Flight times are 5h40 westbound into Cairns and 4h30 eastbound to Auckland, and use Airbus A320 aircraft – not Jetstar’s larger two-class Airbus A330 planes.

That means there’s no no business class or even Jetstar’s premium economy-featured Star Class but that’s standard for the route. Air New Zealand is the only other airline to fly between Auckland and Cairns, and it doesn’t use aircraft with business class seats either. It does offer a “middle seat blocked option called Works Deluxe, usually at a premium of NZ$150 (A$112).It’ll be up to business travellers to figure out whether the convenience of direct flights outweighs the discomfort of all-economy seating on the route.Jetstar’s flights operate on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, which is complementary to Air New Zealand’s schedule of Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Both airlines offer one-way flights at no cost penalty, so it’s simple to mix and match schedules

Emirates underlined its commitment to Libya today by announcing that it will increase capacity on its Tripoli services by 40%. Starting from the 1st November, Emirates will introduce three additional weekly flights to Tripoli, bringing the total number of weekly flights to 10. The new EK 743 flight will depart Dubai at 1740hrs and arrive in Tripoli at 2210hrs every Monday, Thursday and Saturday. The return flight, EK 744, will depart Tripoli at 0010hrs and arrive in Dubai at 0720hrs on every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. The number of passengers travelling with Emirates has been growing steadily since the launch of the Tripoli service a decade ago, said Haitham Al Battawy, Emirates Manager Libya. “We have received numerous requests from both business and leisure travellers within Libya to increase services and we are delighted to be able to respond with these additional flights.
Emirates will continue to offer its customers the best travel experience on the market and now Libyan travelers will have even more convenient access to Emirates’ network of over 100 global destinations, added Al Battawy.
Currently, Emirates’ flights to Tripoli are served by an Airbus A340- 500 aircraft that offers 258 seats in a three class configuration: 12 First Class Suites, 42 Business Class and 204 Economy Class seats, alongside 15 tonnes of belly-hold capacity. The new services will be served by an A300-200 aircraft offering 12 First Class, 42 Business Class and 183 Economy seats. The additional services will also enable SkyCargo to even better serve Libyan exporters by offering them greater capacity and more frequent connections with their target markets.Emirates offers passengers in Tripoli a range of online services including online check-in, the ability to pre-select seats and even request special meals based on specific dietary requirements. Customers also have the ability to check their baggage allowance, including the estimated cost calculator for excess baggage, check their flight status and even subscribe for mobile flight status alerts. The additional capacity announcement comes towards the end of a busy year for Emirates. The airline has launched five new destinations in 2010: Tokyo (Japan) on 28 March, Amsterdam on 1st May, Prague (Czech Republic) on 1st July, Madrid (Spain) on 1st August, and Dakar on 1st September 2010.
Emirates is the largest A380 operator in the world and flies from Dubai to Paris, Jeddah, Seoul, Bangkok, Sydney, Auckland, Beijing, Manchester, London Heathrow and Toronto. In addition – from the 31st October – the aircraft will make its much-anticipated return to New York with its non-stop service between Dubai and JFK.Emirates currently flies to 105 destinations in 64 countries in Europe, North and South America, the Middle East, Africa, the Indian subcontinent and the Asia-Pacific.
